We brought you Solo’s first ever Pinoy Cartoonist Memorabilia featuring Larry Alcala’s Slice of Life last year. Click here for the post on Larry Alcala’s Solo Collection.

I know that all of us loved this collection. I got 74 comments on the post. For the second time, SOLO is brings out its 2nd installment of the well-loved Pinoy Cartoonist Memorabilia series. This time it features the greatest work of the Father of Philippine Cartoons, Tony Velasquez, which was popularly known as KENKOY.

Tony Velasquez created Kenkoy way back in 1929. Long before the era of shobiz personalities that we know of, there already was a Philippine pop icon named Francisco Harabas, more popularly known as Kenkoy. He was always known for his “pustura” since he was a dashing debonair, with a fashion sense that was influenced by the West. He was caught wearing suspenders, charol shoes, double breasted suit, baggy pants, a sailor hat, and a slicked back hairstyle.

Kenkoy is considered the most influential comic strip in the Philippines and most successful because of the wittiness and humor, as well as his antics, colonial way of thinking, and carabao-english. Kenkoy gained massive following that he was adapted into movies in 1950s-60s and musical act in early 90s.

This year, i’m definitely excited to wear the Solo Pinoy Cartoonist Memorablia which features the Kenkoy comic strips. This collection uses fabrics with different treatments such as foil printing, embroidery, embossed printing, flocking, high density printing and washed effect. The collection consists of His&Hers graphic tees, polo shirts, woven tops and dresses, men’s long sleeves, shorts and accessories such as stainless necklaces and slingbags, gift sets like watches, vanity sets and lighters and will hit Solo stores in September.

Each Memoriabilia Series item will have its own bio-tag of Tony Velasquez as well as its own unique packaging. To view the entire Men’s collection, click here and Ladies’ collection, click here.

You can win one of two items: 1) A His or hers black or white graphic tee (you can choose one shirt) or a 2) Dog tag necklace.

Check out these items:

I will raffle off one winner of the t-shirt and one winner of the dog tag necklace on September 5, 2011. All you have to do is comment on this page and leave your name, email address and a reason why you should win one of the two items.

I love my Dad, who is a komiks artist. He’s a traditional illustrator using pencil, pen and ink. It’s funny and amazing how he learned Photoshop in his late 50’s. I love to get this Kenkoy memorabilia. We are both fan of komiks! I haven’t completed his site yet, but do check out http://www.drawkits.com if you guys have the time. Sorry sa plug. More power Manila reviews!

Being a kid during our era, Komiks is the most popular reading material for us. It also inspired me to do my “mini komiks” version to plot a silly story about my toys. I really miss those days with Komiks as a reader. Simple life deserves a retreat from old ways of entertainment with a big twist of caricature and printed conversation from Kenkoy by Mr. Tony Velazquez.

I have always loved reading comics, even as a kid. It would be nice to have something to remind me of my komiks-reading days. :)
