Yabu – House of Katsu, Megamall EJ Arboleda April 3, 2012 Featured, Food & Dining, Reviews 1 Comment Craving for some Japanese one day, we decided to skip our usual go-to Japanese resto and decided to try out Yabu in the 2nd floor of Megamall Atrium. It usually is full so it was a pleasant surprise that we were able to be seated immediately. To be fair, there is usually space on the shared table but I’m not usually in the “share a seat, win a friend” mood. First off, let’s start with the amenities. This is me with a giant mountain of pink salt. It’s as big as my head! If you’ve tried Teriyaki Boy’s Chirashi Don, then you would’ve tried the pink salt. It’s a bit sweet and ginger-y, aside from tasting salty of course. This is what the place looks like. That’s the shared table right in the middle of the picture. The place is long and narrow but sufficiently cozy. Appetizers We ordered the tofu and the potato salad for starters. The potato salad was… meh. Pretty standard. The tofu though was a delightful surprise! Served on soy sauce, the earthy taste of the bonito flakes (katsuobushi) and the coldness of the tofu contrast against the tang of the soy sauce. Curry I ordered the Tonkatsu (Pork Katsu) Curry and I have to say I loved it. The tonkatsu was thick, meaty, and juicy. It was covered in perfectly crunchy batter that did not get soggy even submerged in the curry sauce. To give you an idea how resistant to sogginess it is, I had to meet someone so went out for 10 minutes. When I came back, it was like I never went away — still crunchy! I recommend this one if you’re itching for a different flavor of japanese. Ginger ordered the Torikatsu (Chicken Katsu) Don. It had the same katsu flavor and crunchiness as the pork. Ginger was surprised by how much food that dish was — certainly more than she can handle which makes it well worth the price. Service The service was okay. Not bad but doesn’t stand out either. CONCLUSION We highly recommend Yabu House of Katsu. One of the best new restaurants we’ve tried in a while. So if you’re ever in Megamall Atrium, before you get in line for your Gong Cha, grab some Katsu first from Yabu! Be Sociable, Share!
