Last Saturday, we hurriedly left our home in Quezon City, to reach Bonifacio Global City before 10:00 am. Ej, my husband, did not have time to eat breakfast. We were expecting traffic to be bad since roads were being repaired in C5. We reached BGC at 9:30 am. We had 30 minutes to spare so we decided to grab a quick meal (for Ej) at Mercato Centrale.

Ej was raring and daring to try the popular “Bagnetta” or the Pan de Bagnet which was sold at the Bale Dutung stall. We haven’t tried it yet but people were raving about this panini.

We immediately went to the Bale Dutung booth and we were 2nd in line to order the famous sandwich. We saw how the server prepared the sandwich. The service was good. We only waited around 2 minutes before we were served.

The Pan de Bagnet is toasted ciabatta bread, stuffed with crispy bagnet. It was also stuffed with other ingredients — the Ilocano KBL (Kamatis, Bagoong and Lasuna).

I visited the Bale Dutung website and according to Claude Tayag, this is the Filipino version of Porcheta. Porcheta is a roast pork sandwich of the Italians.

The sandwich was drenched in sauce, which actually spilled out of the sandwich. It was not too salty even if there was bagoong in it. I think the Ciabatta was a good choice for the sandwich. The pork was cooked well and the meat was fresh, but we wished the skin was crispier. It was filling and it really kept Ej full until around early afternoon. Each Pan de Bagnet was sold at Php 200. We wished if were sold cheaper though.

For those who want to try this specialty, you can visit Mercato Centrale and look for Bale Dutung’s stall. They also serve the also famous Lechon Tortilla.
